Biographies

Roy Carroll is a composer / performer, born in Dublin currently living in Berlin. His primary instrument is the sampler which he approaches as an ‘electro-acoustic’ instrument*. In 2009 he began to work directly with loudspeakers removed from their cabinets, manipulating them and ‘preparing’ them with various textured materials, resonant objects etc. In addition to their function as the outlet for the audio signals from a sampler loaded with microscopically recorded acoustic sound, DIY audio accidents, interior field recordings etc., the loudspeakers become acoustic sound sources in their own right. Working physically with the loudspeakers, Roy provokes kinetic / acoustic interactions between the speakers and the (mostly salvaged) materials.
Roy has collaborated extensively with choreographer Maya Lipsker, and is currently working on commissions for Icebreaker (UK), classical guitarist Ben Dwyer, the Dublin Guitar Quartet, and Prey Woodwind Trio. He has received numerous awards and grants including Composer’s Bursaries, Project Awards and Commissions from The Arts Council of Ireland. Roy studied composition with Roger Doyle and Donnacha Dennehy and holds an M-Phil in music and media from Trinity College Dublin. 

Having begun playing jazz in the late 40’s, Lol Coxhill’s career has encompassed many different styles of music, working with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Rufus Thomas, The Damned, Kevin Ayers and Steve Miller’s Delivery, amongst many others. However, he has perhaps best known for his work as an improviser. As well as performances with Brotherhood of Breath, Company, Trevor Watts’ Moire Music and the London Improvisers Orchestra, he has had many long-standing groupings: The Recedents (with Mike Cooper and Roger Turner), duos with Veryan Weston, Pat Thomas and Lu Edmonds, Birdyak (with Bob Cobbing, Jennifer Pyke and Hugh Metcalfe).
Lol Coxhill has been performing unaccompanied improvisations for over 40 years. He was one of the very first saxophonists to perform extensively in this manner, and was probably the first one to do so on soprano saxophone.

Patrick Farmer plays acoustic and amplified turntable. He has performed at the National Galleriet in Stockholm, The Red Room in Baltimore, and the I.C.A. in London, performing with Ryu Hankil, Will Guthrie, Robert Curgenven, and Dominic Lash. Farmer has published recordings through such labels as Cathnor, Another Timbre, and Psykick Dancehall. He co-runs the Compost and Height label

“My musical work subdivides itself into as many ways as occasions arise for me to think and act with sound. Those occasions have always to do with a strong meeting with an outside element: an instrument  (saxophone/organ), a theoretical idea (what is “rumour”?), and mainly a collaborating friend (André Almuro, Éric Cordier, Éric La Casa, Pascal Battus, Franck Gourdien, Taku Unami …Seijiro Murayama) …
There then follows a collection of themes which, in turn, influence the evolution of the musical work and define the direction of meetings to come: the thickness of the air, the pidgin (language with neither grammar nor vocabulary), the musical instrument considered as affective automaton, listening dark unto itself, the algebra of and in hearing, sound as a signature of space, signature of objects, signature of what it is not… the fact that French uses the same word – le temps – for time and weather, propagation and spread of forms in time etc. Music is, then, a way to test reality.
Conversely, it’s a test whose experience defines a new distribution of the whole body by artificially localizing it in an unknown and purely physical environment, all the while being able to think, count, make relations or understand places, and so forth. The emotion I look for in music is made out of all these strata and the (more or less easy) sliding of one over the other during the act of listening.”

Sarah Hughes plays zither as part of the improvising trio Loris. She has performed at the Blurred Edges festival in Hamburg, The Unnamed Music festival in London, and has co-curated part of the Audible Fields series in Bristol. Hughes co-runs the Compost and Height label.

The composer and instrumentalist Leopold Hurt (born 1979 in Regensburg) studied at the Richard-Strauss-Conservatory Munich (zither with Georg Glasl, viola da gamba and historically informed performance with Hartwig Groth and Michael Eberth). He received his first composition lessons from Peter Kiesewetter. In 2004 he continued his studies in composition with Manfred Stahnke at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg. He participated in master classes with Dieter Schnebel, Paul-Heinz Dittrich, Brian Ferneyhough (composition), and Nigel North (Early Music). Beside that he attended courses in electronic music at the IRCAM in Paris.He most recently draw attention with the music theater “Medea” (text by Christa Wolf). A number of works reflects his engagement with historical sound documents of traditional folk music, also with electronics and multimedia. His compositions were performed by noted ensembles like the Ensemble Modern, the Ensemble Intégrales, the Austrian Ensemble for New Music and the Munich Chamber Orchestra.As a musician he performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra di Roma. In addition to that, he also works as a conductor and contributes in many ways to integrate the zither in the current music scene. One result of this is the cooperation with the DJ duo Gebrüder Teichmann (Berlin). On behalf of the Goethe-Institute concert tours took him repeatedly to China and to the Lebanon..
He lives and works in Hamburg (Germany).

Daniel Jones is an improvising musician based in Brighton, England. One third of the groups Loris (with Patrick Farmer and Sarah Hughes) and Tierce (with Ivan Palacky and Jez riley French) he has had music released on the Another Timbre, Cathnor, Engraved Glass and Roeba labels.

Anthony Kelly & David Stalling have been collaborating on a series of sound and visual works since 2003. Their work encompasses a shared practice of recycling ‘objets trouveés’ of sound, visual and text material in their ongoing collaborative sessions. The juxtaposition of contrasting material results in a series of audio/visual ‘musique concrète’ pieces. Kelly and Stalling also perform live improvisations, as a duo as well as with others, including The Quiet Club (Danny McCarthy & Mick O’Shea) and most recently the Strange Attractor project, where they have performed with Steve Roden, Alessandro Bosetti, David Toop, Stephen Vitiello, Lee Patterson amongst others. Kelly & Stalling founded the sound art label Farpoint Recordings in 2005.

David Lacey is a musician from Dublin. He plays regularly with Rob Casey, Fergus Kelly, Cian Nugent and Paul Vogel as well as the groups Chip Shop Music and Legion of Two. He is a co-founder of the label homefront recordings.

Born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1957, percussionist, drummer, Seijiro Murayama works in France since 1999 after almost 20 years of improvised music experiences, during which he encountered with Fred Frith, Tom Cora, Keiji Haino, KK Null.
His artistic principal is especially to seek for the plural-disciplinity between music and other disciplines of art: danse, video, paintings, photos, litterature etc. 
Murayama collaborates with philosopher, Jean-Luc Nancy, video artist, Olivier Gallon, choregrapher, Catherine Diverrès, painter, François Bidault, writer, Nicolas Vatimbella etc. 
Otherwise he collaborates with a lot of musicians, composers, and sound artists: Jean-Luc Guionnet, Eric La Casa, Eric Cordier, Lionel Marchetti, Michael Northam, Klaus Filip, Axel  Dörner, Ignaz Schick, Toshimaru Nakamura,Tim blechmann, Toshiya Tsunoda, Pascale Criton, Soundworm etc. 
His aproach is based on a lot of attention to the space and the place, to the energy of the audience and the quality of silence in various ways.He is interested in making continuum, microscopic sounds and in how we can ‘vitalise delicately’ the space with the sound. 
For his solo that has been innovated in a past few years, only with the snare drum, he uses air and contact microphones, which enlarge the possibility to circulate between the acoustic sound and the amplified one, with a clear intention of making sounds sometimes on the edge of perceptions.

Miles Perkin (b.1980) is a Canadian musician from Brandon, Manitoba. A bassist, composer, improvisor and interpreter with a strong focus on using improvisation as a tool which maintains, respects and enhances compositional structures. He uses a unique combination of conventional, extended and invented techniques along with unconventional tools to coax a vast palate of sounds from his double bass.In addition to his work as a soloist, he is involved in a wide range of Canadian and European based musical projects including: A new Quartet with Benoit Delbecq, Tom Arthurs and Thom Gossage, his 6 piece ensemble Common Thread, Steve Raegele Trio, Thom Gossage Other Voices, trio with Tom Arthurs & Yorgos Dimitriadis, trio with Philippe Lauzier & Robbie Kuster, Peter Van Huffel Quartet, duo with Benoit Delbecq, trio with Achim Kaufmann & Samuel Rohrer, duo with violinist Gerhard Uebele, and a trio with Magda Mayas & Rudi Fischerlehner.

Keith Rowe is one of the pioneers of improvised music. He was one of the co-founders of the hugely influential group AMM. Inspired by his background in the visual arts, he developed the tabletop guitar at this time, which has been evolving ever since. Since the late 90’s, he has played with a staggering array of musicians, most notably Toshimaru Nakamura, Sachiko M, Axel Dörner, Burkhard Beins and Taku Sugimoto. He has also worked on a long-running collaboration with Norwegian video artist Kjell Bjørgeengen. His most recent release is ‘Φ’, a three-disc collaboration with Austrian composer and trombonist Radu Malfatti.

Paul Vogel is an improviser based in Ireland. His original instruments were piano and clarinet but in recent times he has incorporated electronics into his set-up. He was a membert of the Bristol Musicians Co-Op in the late seventies and is currently a co-curator with David Lacey of the organisation i-and-e which promotes improvised music in Dublin. He has composed music for radio and contemporary dance groups and also worked and recorded with many international improvisers including Phil Durrant, Lee Patterson, Angharad Davies, Mark Wastell and Keith Rowe. He has released recordings on Homefront, Confront and Cathnor.
